Waldorf Handwork: Wet Felting With Young Children

Wet felting is a lovely way to begin handwork with young children because it is relatively easy and has a cute finished product! But why do wet felting? Well, the actual work of it builds patience, focus, and creativity while also strengthening fine motor skills and muscles. It is also calming and can help with regulating the nervous system. Seeing their finished project can boost confidence and self-esteem and gives children a chance to complete a project that requires sustained attention. All that and cute to boot!

As children get older, they can move into needle felting which is a bit more complex but has more applications, from making ornaments to pictures and even structured objets like dolls and baskets. Handwork with young children is an enriching, meditative activity with beautiful results.
